To clean the Classic Mat and Pillow, remove the foam and hand-wash the cotton cover in warm soapy water, using a soft brush to clean the spikes. Rinse and hang to dry in the shade. Once dry, re-insert the foam, ready for your next Shakti practice.
Store them out of the sun, as UV rays can cause the color to fade. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

A little, but only in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough – or you’re beyond relaxed already – you won’t feel much.
After a few minutes, the tingling sensation fades into a deep, relaxing warmth. The redness is purely a circulation boost. You might even fall asleep.

2. Shakti spikes are much sharper than anything else out there.Like the firmness of a mattress or the pressure of a massage, acupressure is the opposite of 'one size fits all'. If you go too far in the beginning you're less likely to build a solid habit. It's why we offer three intensities in our Classic range that all unlock the benefits of acupressure.
Level 1 is the perfect place to start. Expect a gentle balance of initial sensation and deep release. Ideal for anyone new to acupressure.
Level 2 is for the bold. Fewer spikes means more initial discomfort, so commit to pushing through to unlock a deeper release.
Level 3 is for the brave. Expect serious sensation upfront, with plenty of reward if you can handle it.

The original home of the Shakti Mat, and where our Classic Mats and Pillows are made is the holy city of Varanasi. In the rural outskirts of the city, it can be difficult for females to find meaningful employment.
When the Gratitude Factory was first formed in 2008, the vision was to create a sanctuary for female employees where they could become self-sufficient and financially independent in an inclusive and safe space.
All women employed at The Gratitude Factory are paid a living wage, sick leave and holiday leave. They are provided weekly meals, time for daily puja, free medical care, and an emergency medical fund for them and their families.
